چکیده

As urban transportation planning becomes more sophisticated, the accurate detection and counting of pedestrians and bicyclists becomes more important. In this project, two distinct camera-based approaches are integrated together to create a real-time pedestrian and bicyclist counting system which is regularly accurate to 85% and often achieves higher accuracy. The primary approach retasks a state-of-the-art traffic camera, the Autoscope Solo Terra, for pedestrian and bicyclist counting. Object detection regions are sized to identify multiple pedestrians moving in either direction on an urban sidewalk and bicyclists in an adjacent bicycle lane. Collected results are processed in real time, eliminating the need for video storage and postprocessing. Although this primary approach shows high accuracy, in some cases undercounting or overcounting of pedestrians can occur. To combat these issues, a second camera can be used to identify pedestrian heads and shoulders. Image recognition is then used to improve the accuracy of the count while still allowing the overall combined approach to operate in real time. In this report, results are presented for a pedestrian walkway for pedestrian flow up to 108 persons/min and the limitations of the implemented system are enumerated.

University of Vermont School of Engineering Presents:

The accurate detection and counting of pedestrians and bicyclists on a roadway is a challenging and unsolved problem in computer vision. This is primarily due to the highly unpredictable behavior of pedestrians and bicyclists in contrast to that of motorists. The strategy used so far in Chittenden County has been to record video data of desired roadways in rural, urban and suburban environments ...

Risk Factors for Road Traffic Injuries among Different Road Users in the Gambia

We identified risk factors for road traffic injuries among road users who received treatment at two major trauma hospitals in urban Gambia. The study includes pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists, and drivers/passengers of cars and trucks. We examined distributions of injury by age, gender, collision vehicle types and vehicle category, and driver and environment factors. Two hundred and fifty...

A Study of Injury Risk of Bicyclist and Pedestrian in Traffic Accidents in Changsha of China

The objective of the study is to measure the risk of pedestrian and bicyclist in urban traffic through an analysis of real-world accident data. The kinematics and injury mechanisms for both pedestrian and bicyclists are investigated to find the correlation of injury risks with injury related parameters. For this purpose, firstly 338 cases are selected as a sample from an IVAC accident database ...

Pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities account for approximately 21% and 8% of all road fatalities in the EU, respectively. The objective was to describe the characteristics of fatal crashes with pedestrians and bicyclists on Swedish rural roads and to investigate the potential of different infrastructure and vehicle interventions to prevent them. The Swedish Transport Administration (STA) in-dept...
